Description

The apparatus has been designed to introduce studentsto the fundamental characteristics of the behaviourofthe particle system, in particular the relationship betweenthe drag coefficient of falling particles and Reynoldsnumber. Particles covering a range of sizes and densitiesare supplied and the experiments are conducted byallowing single particles to fall through a number ofdifferent liquids contained in a vertical glass tube. Therate of fall of the particle is determined by timing theirpassage between two marks on the walls of the glasstubes. Observation of the particle movement is aided bythe provision of a shielded fluorescent tube lightmounted on the backboard. Particles can be removedfrom the bottom of the tubes without the necessity ofdraining the liquid. A valve system is provided at thebottom of each tube to allow the particles to be removedwith the minimum loss of liquid.
